Afrasiab Museum, Samarkand
Named after the legendary king of Turan, Afrasiab was situated on the Silk Road, a vital route for East, West, and Central Asia, as well as Europe and India. More than just an historical city, it is the actual site of the ancient city, which had straight paved streets and strong defensive walls. The Afrasiab Museum located on this site houses famous mural paintings and artifacts excavated at this location in Samarkand. These artifacts include ornamental earthenware crockery, tools, coins, and terracotta statuettes. The artifacts are preserved and interpreted in the Museum. From these archeological findings, visitors to Uzbekistan get a clear picture of what life was like over the long history of Samarkand, from the most ancient times (fourth century B.C.) to the thirteenth century. Travel to Central Asia should definitely include a visit to this region of Uzbekistan, where the ancient past is so remarkably tangible.
