Bombay (Mumbai)

The new name for Bombay is Mumbai. Mambai, a sprawling, overcrowded seaport on the west coust of India, is a microcosm of all that is right and wrong in India. This is a city of startling contrasts - soaring skyscrapers are built besides mud huts; great wealth is seen abjacent to abject poverty. Pleasure palaces serve as backdrops for swarms of beggars pleading for arms in the streets, and choking traffic comes to a halt at the presence of the sacred cow in the streets. Mumbai is called he Gateway to India and offers important sights such as the Prince of Wales Museum, the Hanging Gardens, and the Jehangir Art Gallery. Six miles south of the ciry is the island of Elephanta, where eight-century cave temples containing large rock deities are found. The Ellora and Ajanta rock-hewn cave temples, which are more than 2000 years old, are located several miles inland and can be reached by bus or taxi. There caves are must-sees for any touris visiting Mumbai.
