Chor - Minor Madrasah, Bukhara
Built in 1807, the Chor - Minor Madrasah is a relatively recent structure in ancient Bukhara. The name means "four minarets", but the four columns it refers to are really more like a decorative imitation of true minarets. Although the building itself is smaller than most monuments seen on a tour of Bukhara, it is a very charming and picturesque structure. Included in its architectural design are a summer mosque and a cozy courtyard with a pond. The Madrasah is finished in plain baked brick, but the four striking cupolas are decorated with wide bands of geometric shapes made of glazed tile. Topping all four columns are lovely deep blue cupolas, which contrast beautifully against the cloudless skyline of Bukhara. This monument is a wonderful addition to any tour of Uzbekistan.
