Labi - Hauz Ensemble, Bukhara
The name Labi - Hauz Ensemble refers to its location on the shores of a large reservoir in the center of Bukhara. The name translated means "at reservoir". Built in 1620, the complex consists of three large monuments. These are the Kukeldash Madrasah in the north, and the Nodir Divan-begi and Khanaka to the west and east. There is an interesting ancient legend regarding this particular property. It is said that at the time construction was ordered, the architect had a problem purchasing the land required. It seems an old woman who lived alone refused to sell her property. The powerful Uzbekistan ruler then ordered that a channel be built beneath her home in Bukhara. As the waters began washing away the foundation and walls, the woman was forced to sell. The Kukeldash Madrasah was constructed in the late fifteen hundreds. It is the largest Madrasah in Bukhara. Multi-celled and topped with a beautiful cupola, it was designed to offer a little more in comfort for the students than was traditional at the time. The unique architecture also allows for better cross-ventilation and maximum light exposure.
