Magoki-Attori Mosque, Bukhara
Magoki-Attori Mosque is located in the center of Bukhara, is an urban-style mosque in a residential area. Although it is a very ancient structure, it has been rebuilt and preserved so that today it stands with very minimal damage. The original structure was built upon in layers over time, and by the sixteenth century it had basically sunk into the sands of Bukhara. However, excavations carried out in the 1930s unearthed the remarkable monument. The face of the building is asymmetrical with a lovely recessed portal. The bricks form geometric patterns. The design also includes glazed tile and terra cotta carved leaf and plant forms. As with many of the historic monuments seen during travel to Uzbekistan, this ensemble of buildings is a great example of ancient Central Asian architecture.
