Mir-i Arab Madrasah, Bukhara
It is often difficult to distinguish between a mosque, which is a center of religious study, and a Madrasah, which means school, because education is very closely connected to worship in Islam. Probably these buildings were originally used for both purposes. The Mir-i Arab Madrasah in Bukhara is one of only two that were allowed to continue to function under the rule of the Soviet Union. It has one hundred cells for students studying law, literature and Arabic. There are two large blue domes, one on either side of the main entranceway. The building’s great size alone is awe-inspiring, but it is also known for the beautiful calligraphy, as well as for the decorations of elaborate mosaic, relief work and painting. This monument is truly a remarkable sight for visitors who travel to Uzbekistan and tour Bukhara.
