This is a monument which is also a well-known landmark in the Uzbekistan city of Samarkand. It was built on order of the ruler Timor, also known as Tamerlane the Great, whose intention was for this structure to be the most impressive of any he had ever seen in any other country. Talented artists, craftsman and architects from conquered foreign lands all over Central Asia were brought to Uzbekistan to work on the construction of this magnificent mosque.

Also located in the Uzbekistan city of Samarkand is the Shakhi-Zinda, an avenue of tombs belonging for the most part to the famous ruler Timur, or Tamerlane, and his beloved relatives. These tombs are a must - see for those who travel to Uzbekistan. They are decorated in very beautiful tile work, famed throughout the world. The name of this holy mausoleum, Shakhi-Zinda, means "the living king" and refers to the grave of Qusam ibn-Abbas, a cousin of the great prophet Muhammad, who is said to be responsible for bringing Islam to this region of Central Asia. This street of tombs is one of the most moving attractions of Uzbekistan tours.
