People of Kyrgyzstan

General information about Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is virtually a land of mountains. More than fifty per cent of the country exists at elevations higher than eight hundred feet. Kyrgyzstan is situated in an area of Central Asia in between the Tian-Shan Mountains and the Pamir Mountains-- the two most massive mountain ranges in Central Asia. Among the peaks of the Tian-Shan Mountain system in the region of Kyrgyzstan is Victory Peak, also known in Russian as Pik Pobedy, and in the language of the Kyrgyz as Jenish Chokosu. Rising towards the sky at an impressive twenty-four thousand and four hundred feet, Victory Peak is not only the highest point in the country, but also the highest point in the entire former Soviet Union.

Kyrgyzstan travel guide

Kyrgyzstan contains flourishing forests with abundant evergreens, such as the coniferous Tian-Shan White Spruce tree. These forests are home to several species of wildflowers and ferns. The forests of Kyrgyzstan are inhabited by a broad range of animal species, including rabbit, mountain sheep, deer, and mountain goats. Several species of wild animals inhabit the woods and forests of Kyrgyzstan. Our Central Asia tours from Kyrgyzstan's travel guide may include visiting these woodlands and forests, where tourists may catch sight of the red wolf, Tian-Shan bear, and the beautiful snow leopard. Some of these animals are on the endangered list and under the special protection of the government.

Mountains of Kyrgyzstan

Most of the mountains systems run east to west throughout the country. However, running through the central part of the country are the Fergana Mountains, which actually extend in a southeast to northwest direction. Most of the country is covered in glaciers and everlasting snow fields, but there are a few notable low- land areas such as the Chu Valley to the north and the tropical Fergana Valley to the west.

Rivers of Kyrgyzstan

The largest river in the country, the Naryn River, flows down from the northeastern mountains, passes through the lush Fergana Valley, and then enters Uzbekistan. In Uzbekistan the Naryn River joins with another river, forming the Syr Darya, one of the principal rivers of Central Asia.

Issyk-Kul Lake, Kyrgyzstan

Issyk-Kul Lake

One of the largest and most beautiful lakes on earth, Lake Issyk-Kul, is located here in Kyrgyzstan. Situated in the country's northeastern section, at an altitude of nearly five thousand, three hundred feet above sea level, Lake Issyk-Kul, along with the other mountain lakes of Kyrgyzstan, is an annual refuge for migrating birds by the thousands. Among these is the Mountain Goose, as well as several other rare species of geese, ducks, and birds.

Historical attractions and must-see places on tour to Kyrgyzstan

A very interesting attraction on tours to Kyrgyzstan exists in the village of Kyzl-Bairak. Travelers are amazed by the splendid memorial built here to honor the memory of a great ruler, Atake-baatyr and his great-grandson, both of whom were the major forces uniting the independent tribes of the country. Funds for this wonderful monument were obtained form donations contributed by citizens from all over Kyrgyzstan. At one time known as "The Prince of Kyrgyz Tribes", Atake-baatyr is depicted in this monument holding a scroll as he stands on a pedestal with a snow leopard at his feet. His statue is situated so that it is facing the rising sun as it comes up over the mountains. There is a pink- sand covered road leading to the monument, with bright green fir trees lining the road on either side. On the left-hand side of the monument is a museum where, for the first time ever, rare photos and documents are exhibited which trace the long history of the people of Kyrgyzstan.
