Best Time To Visit 5 Stans and Caucasus?
The best times to visit Central Asia and the Caucasus are from mid-April to mid-June and from mid-August to the end of November.
These seasons bring the perfect balance of pleasant weather, vibrant landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. Spring welcomes you with blooming valleys and lively festivals, while autumn enchants with golden mountains, crisp air, and the warm hospitality of the region.
Can I book A Private Or Custom Tour?
Absolutely! Any of our tours can be arranged as a private tour for as few as 2 people. You will follow one of our existing itineraries, enjoy private transportation, and have a dedicated guide just for your group. This option gives you more flexibility with daily timing, meal breaks, and photo stops — all at your own pace. The additional cost is $1,000 per person, and you can choose any departure date that suits you.
For those seeking an even more personalized experience, we also offer custom-designed tours. These are created entirely around your interests — from itinerary and hotel selection to restaurant choices and overall budget. It is a perfect option if you have a specific vision for your journey.
How Physically Demanding Is The Tour?
While our scheduled tours do not require ability for hiking or trekking, they do require ability to walk long distances during sightseeing and walking up and down stairs. On average, you can expect to walk about 3–5 miles per day at a comfortable pace, often with breaks and sightseeing stops.
Please consider other participants on the tour by avoiding being late for excursions or needing excessive time to sit and rest while sightseeing. It is important that you are able to carry your own luggage. Most of participants on our scheduled tours are in their late 50’s to early 70’s.
What Is The Average Group Size?
We keep our groups small — usually between 4 and 15 travelers — to ensure a more personal and engaging experience. With fewer people, the tour feels more like a friendly conversation than a formal lecture, allowing for deeper interaction with your guide and fellow travelers.
Will We Have The Same Guide Throughout The Tour?
You will have a dedicated local guide in each country, ensuring in-depth knowledge and seamless support throughout your journey. In Central Asia, one guide will accompany you across Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, another will lead you through Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and a third will guide you in Turkmenistan. In the Caucasus, You will be met by a knowledgeable guide in each individual country. Within each country, your guide stays with the group full-time to assist and enrich your experience.

What Is Included In The Tour Price?
The price covers everything you need for a smooth and enriching experience: visa processing (including consular fees), comfortable hotel accommodations (twin room sharing), all air and land transportation during the tour, full board meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), entrance fees, and guided sightseeing in each city. You will also be accompanied 24/7 by an English-speaking tour coordinator, and receive pre-departure reading materials to help you prepare for the journey.
Do You Accommodate Special Diets (Vegetarian, Halal, Gluten-Free)?
Yes, we do. At hotel breakfasts, You will have a wide variety of options to choose from. For lunches and dinners, we dine at quality restaurants where you can order your own meals from a full menu, including salads, soups, two main courses, unlimited bread, tea, and coffee.
Every day, we also provide two 1-liter bottles of drinking water per person.
The cuisine on tour is diverse — a mix of European, American, and local dishes — with options that include fish, chicken, red meat, and vegetarian meals. You’re free to choose what suits your dietary needs and preferences at each meal.
Can Children Join Your Tours?
While children are welcome, we recommend private tours for families with young travelers. Our group tours are mostly attended by guests in their golden age, so a private tour offers greater flexibility and comfort for both children and parents.
What Happens If I Get Sick During The Tour?
Your safety and well-being are our top priority. Pharmacies are widely available, and allergy or basic over-the-counter medications can be easily purchased. In case of illness or emergency, modern medical facilities are accessible in all major cities, and our team will assist you in getting the care you need.
Do I Need Travel Insurance?
While not mandatory, we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and travel disruptions. If needed, we can also provide quotes by email and help you arrange a suitable policy — just let us know.
Is it safe to travel in Central Asia and the Caucasus?
Yes, the countries included in our tours are safe for travelers. We closely monitor local conditions and prioritize your well-being at all times. Crime rates are low, and it’s generally safe to walk around even in the evenings. Locals are warm and welcoming.
According to the U.S. Department of State, all countries on this tour are ranked as Category 1 (safe with normal precautions), except Tajikistan, which is Category 2 due to a remote border area that our itinerary does not visit.

What Happens After I Book?
After you complete your reservation form, you will receive a welcome package with detailed tour information and a book to enjoy while preparing for your journey.
Approximately three months before the tour begins, we will send you the necessary documents to process your visas. Once we receive them back, we will take care of all your entry documents on your behalf.
About three weeks before departure, you will receive your tour voucher by email. This package will include the names and contact information of your guides, a list of hotels with addresses and phone numbers for each day of the tour, your tickets for internal flights or trains (if applicable), border crossing instructions, and other useful details. Once you confirm receipt of all documents, we will schedule a 45-minute call to walk you through the day-by-day itinerary, baggage allowance, packing tips, cash handling, climate expectations, and answer any final questions.
As soon as we receive your international flight information, we will arrange a hotel reservation to match your travel details. Airport transfers at the beginning and end of the tour are included in the tour price. If you would like assistance with booking your international air tickets, please let me know.
Do I Need A Visa? How Do I Get It?
Citizens of the USA, Australia, and Canada do not need visas for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan (if over 55), Armenia, and Georgia. Only Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan require electronic visas, which we will help you obtain in advance.
We take care of the entire visa process for you — including completing the forms, paying consular fees, and submitting your application. All we need from you is a scanned copy of your passport and a photograph.
*Please note: we submit the visa application on your behalf, exactly as if you were applying yourself. However, the final decision is made by the issuing consulate or authorities, and we cannot guarantee visa approval, as this lies outside of our control.
What Documents Do I Need To Submit?
To process your visa, we will need the following:
– A clear color scan of the passport spread with your photo and personal details (not just one page). Make sure the image is straight, without glare or shadows, and all four corners are visible.
– A recent passport-style photograph (taken within the last 6 months), in color, with a plain white background. Your full face should be visible, with a neutral expression and no headwear (unless for religious reasons). Glasses should be removed if possible.

Occasionally, Turkmenistan may request additional details such as spouse or children’s information, but this is not currently required.
When And How Do I Pay?
A $500 US deposit is required at the time of reservation to secure your spot. The remaining balance is due 60 days before departure. We accept payments by credit or debit card, check, money order, or bank transfer — whichever is most convenient for you.
Is The Deposit Refundable?
The deposit is non-refundable, but it is fully transferable. If your plans change, your deposit will be applied to any future tour with us. This allows you to book with confidence, knowing your payment is protected even if your travel dates shift.
What Is Your Refund And Cancellation Policy?
If you need to cancel your trip, please notify East Site Inc. in writing. Once we receive your cancellation notice, the following refund policy applies to the land tour cost:
– 61 or more days before departure: full refund minus the deposit
– 31–60 days before departure: 50% refund
– 30 days or less before departure: no refund
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment. Please contact us if you would like help obtaining a policy.
Are Airport Transfers Included? What If I Arrive Early Or Depart Late?
Yes, airport transfers are included in the tour price. We will meet you upon arrival and see you off upon departure, regardless of your flight time — whether it is early morning or late at night.
If you plan to arrive before the official tour start date or leave after it ends, we can also help arrange early hotel check-in, late check-out, or additional hotel nights upon request.
When Will I Get My Travel Documents?
You will receive your full set of travel documents — including your tour voucher, internal flight and train tickets, hotel list with addresses and phone numbers, and emergency contacts — about three weeks before your departure date. These will be sent to you by email. Once you confirm receipt, we will schedule a call to review the final details and answer any remaining questions.
What Clothes Should I Pack?
Dress comfortably — the dress code is similar to what you would wear in most European countries. Casual clothing like t-shirts and shorts is perfectly fine, and there is no need for formal attire. We recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes, a sunhat, sunglasses, and SPF lotion. Evenings can be cooler, so a light jacket or sweater may come in handy.
When visiting mosques or religious sites, modest clothing is appreciated, but women are not required to cover their heads unless they prefer to.
What Is The Baggage Allowance?
The baggage allowance on this tour matches standard international flight policies. Each traveler is allowed:
– One checked bag up to 24 kg (50 lbs)
– One carry-on bag up to 8 kg (17 lbs)
– One small personal item (like a handbag or backpack)
This allowance applies to both internal flights and trains during the tour. If you bring more than this, additional baggage fees may apply depending on the airline. On the 5 Stans tour, which includes four internal flights, excess baggage fees typically range from $25 to $50 per flight, or $100–200 total, if applicable.
What Kind Of Electrical Plugs Are Used?
In Central Asia and the Caucasus, the standard electrical outlets are the same as in most of Europe — with two round prongs and a voltage of 220V.
At the start of the tour, we will provide each traveler with a free adapter, which can be used with phone chargers, laptops, and other small electronics. Please note that the adapter is not suitable for high-voltage appliances like hair dryers or kettles.
Will I Have Internet Access?
Yes, Wi-Fi is available and free in all hotels along the tour. The connection is generally strong enough for checking emails, browsing, and staying in touch from your room.
Most U.S. cell phones will also work throughout the tour route via international roaming, depending on your provider. The only exception is Turkmenistan, where roaming service may be unavailable.
During The Tour
What Meals Are Included?
We provide three meals a day: buffet breakfast at the hotel, and lunch and dinner at local restaurants. Each restaurant meal includes a salad, soup, main course, and non-alcoholic beverages (such as tea, coffee, or soft drinks). You will be able to choose your dishes from the menu — typically selecting one salad, one soup, and two main courses. Tea, coffee, and bread are offered without limit.
Alcoholic drinks are not included in the tour price but are widely available. You can expect to pay around $2–3 for a beer, $7–10 for a bottle of wine, and $15–20 for a bottle of vodka. Other spirits are also available at most restaurants.
We also provide two 1-liter bottles of bottled water per person every day to ensure you stay hydrated throughout the tour.
What Kind Of Food Will Be Served?
Throughout the tour, you will enjoy a mix of local, European, and international cuisine. Meals include a variety of options such as chicken, fish, red meat, vegetarian dishes, and fresh salads — there is something for every taste.
Unlike some companies where meals are pre-selected for the group, you will choose your own dishes from the menu at each restaurant. The only limitation is on the number of items (for example: one soup, one salad, one main course), but the choice is always yours.
The food is generally not spicy, but if you prefer mild flavors, you will always find suitable options.
Can I Drink Tap Water?
We do not recommend drinking tap water during the tour. While it’s safe for activities like showering, brushing your teeth, or washing fruits and vegetables, we advise drinking bottled water only.
To ensure your comfort, we will provide two 1-liter bottles of bottled water per person every day throughout the trip.
Is Alcohol Available?
Yes, alcohol is widely available throughout the tour. Most restaurants offer a variety of options, including beer, wine, vodka, and other spirits. While alcoholic drinks are not included in the tour price, they are affordable — with beer around $2–3, wine $7–10 per bottle, and vodka $15–20 per bottle.
Are Tips Included In The Tour Price?
No, tips are not included in the tour price. While tipping is not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. We recommend budgeting around $5 per person per day for the driver and $5–10 per person per day for the guide, depending on your level of satisfaction.
How Much Cash Should I Bring?
We recommend bringing around $500 USD per person in small denominations ($1, $5, $10, $20) for personal expenses, such as souvenirs, gifts, snacks, and other out-of-pocket purchases. Please make sure your bills are in good condition — no stamps, tears, or markings — as damaged bills may not be accepted.
If you prefer to withdraw money during the tour, ATMs are widely available in all countries along the route except Turkmenistan. You can use a VISA or MasterCard debit card with a PIN number, and the ATM will dispense local currency.
Are There ATMs And Can I Pay By Card?
Yes, ATMs are available in most cities throughout the tour and accept VISA or MasterCard debit cards with a PIN. The machines will dispense local currency. The only exception is Turkmenistan, where ATMs are limited and may not always function reliably.
Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and larger stores or restaurants, but in smaller shops and local markets, cash is preferred — so we recommend always having some local currency on hand.
Is Laundry Service Available During The Tour?
Yes, laundry service is available at all hotels throughout the tour. You can request it at any time during your stay. Please note that prices may vary — laundry in 5-star hotels in capital cities tends to be more expensive than in smaller boutique hotels along the route.
What Kind Of Transportation Is Used?
We use modern, spacious vehicles similar to Mercedes Sprinter vans, where you can stand comfortably. Each traveler is guaranteed two seats for extra space, and everyone gets a window seat. All vehicles are newer models, regularly serviced, and equipped for long-distance travel to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride throughout the tour.
How Long Are The Travel Days?
Most travel days involve just 1 to 3 hours on the road. On a few occasions, the drive may be a bit longer, but never exceeds 5 hours. We also make regular stops for sightseeing, meals, and rest, so the journeys feel easy and enjoyable.
What Is The Highest Altitude We Will Reach?
On the 5 Stans tour, the highest elevation is around 1,600 meters (5,250 feet) above sea level — for example, near Lake Issyk-Kul. This altitude is very manageable and does not typically cause any altitude-related issues.
On the Caucasus tour, the highest point is at Gergeti Trinity Church near Mount Kazbek in Georgia, which sits at approximately 2,160 meters (7,100 feet).
The rest of the tour stays at much lower altitudes, so overall, you’re unlikely to feel any effects from elevation.
Are There Cultural Shows Or Performances Included?
Yes, our tours include culturally rich and vibrant performances that showcase the unique traditions of each country. These often feature traditional music and folk dances performed by costumed artists, offering you an authentic glimpse into the local heritage.
Will I Have Free Time During The Tour?
Yes, there is usually free time in the evenings, once the sightseeing program is over. Occasionally, you may also have some midday breaks depending on the day’s schedule. This gives you a chance to relax, explore on your own, or simply unwind at the hotel after a full day of travel and discovery.
