Kazakhstan: More Complex, Modern, and Diverse than Most Travelers Imagine
- Dispel the Myths: It’s Not the Middle East
One of the most persistent misconceptions locals encounter is about Kazakhstan’s identity and culture.
Almaty resident Kamilla Azhibayeva noted that many outside the country incorrectly assume Kazakhstan is a conservative Muslim country in the Middle East “without modern laws and rules.” This notion overlooks Central Asia’s unique cultural position and its modern, secular governmental structure.
In reality, cities like Almaty are surprisingly modern and cosmopolitan. Saltana Muslim-Ali described the city as “very modern,” adding, “You can find anything here, starting from hipster coffee shops to very authentic bazaars.” This blending of traditional culture and contemporary urban life is what makes Kazakhstan so compelling to visit.
- A Land of Languages: The Cultural Divide
While the country is unified, its linguistic landscape reflects a complex history.
Kamilla Azhibayeva pointed to a “strong separation” between the Russian- and Kazakh-speaking regions of the country. This distinction often corresponds to geographical and historical factors, and it’s a key part of understanding the country’s social fabric.
Kazakhstan’s history is deeply rooted in centuries of nomadic traditions, which define its culture, symbols (like the horse and the yurt), and famous hospitality.
Soviet Republic Era: For much of the 20th century, Kazakhstan was a Soviet republic. This period left a lasting legacy on its architecture, urban planning, and, as the local mentioned, its current linguistic landscape (with Russian being widely spoken, especially in major cities).
As a traveler, you will find that Russian is widely spoken, especially in the larger cities like Almaty and the capital, Nur-Sultan (Astana), but a respect for the Kazakh language and culture is paramount.
- The Unseen Beauty: A Land of Incredible Diversity
When locals talk about their country, they inevitably turn to its spectacular and varied nature. Kazakhstan is the world’s ninth-largest country, and its landscapes are as grand as its size suggests.
“I wish everyone knew how beautiful and diverse Kazakhstan is,” said local Timur Kozhakhmetov. He emphasized the profound range of ecosystems, noting that travelers can find “From deserts and steppes to dense forests and high mountains.”
Independence in 1991: Kazakhstan gained full independence in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Since then, the nation has focused on establishing its own national identity, rapidly developing its economy (as a regional “economic powerhouse”), and building its futuristic capital, Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana).
The diversity of Kazakhstan even manages to surprise those who live there.
Meruert Berikova agreed, stating that even locals like her are often astonished by the sheer diversity of Kazakhstan’s natural wonders.
